Our CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 carbine now has some combat marks. But it has proven itself in hot, dusty and sandy conditions. After owning it for several months we thought it was time for a long term review.
Scorpion Assault Rifle
The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 is the civilian version of the Select Fire CZ Scorpion Evo 3 A1. Available in several stock and rifle mounting configurations. Nicknamed Scorpion in 1961, the first Åkorpion vz. 61 was created. It grew in popularity in Eastern Europe and is still used by many armed forces today. He was also the stereotypical Bond brutal cannon, so if the name rings a bell, maybe that's why.

The new CZ Scorpion was designed with the 21st century in mind and has improved on the older model in many ways. The Evo 3 is chambered in 9mm instead of the original .32 ACP, giving it a bit more stopping power. It features a stronger ejection system built into the bolt that is stronger than the spring-loaded original. The magazine is removed by a flexible lever. Also, a simple rear bolt replaced the Åkorpion's more complicated telescopic wind bolt. This makes it safe and easy to field anchor while keeping the gas in your face. The ejection port is further forward than many other pistol caliber carbines. For these reasons it was our best choice to use silencers.

The CZ Scorpion Evo 3 S1 Carbine is less noticeable as a short barrel, pistol mount variant. It's a shame because it makes such a large caliber gun. CZ designed the front end specifically for the carbine. They've also improved ergonomics by using a softer MLok foregrip. Compared to short versions, it offers more angles for attachments. Plus, it won't cut into your hand like a Picatinny rail.
There are two carbon versions, one with banana brakes and one with a synthetic damper. The Fox suppressor covers the 16-inch barrel underneath like a barrel shroud. If you decide to shoot, you don't need a bolt-on attachment to meet legal requirements for a 16-inch barrel.

It also adds a little more than half a pound to the weight of the device. For these reasons, we recommend the Faux Suppressor model for aesthetic reasons alone. The muzzle brake version is functional and has little effect on perceived recoil. It's usually a little cheaper too. This is surprising because SilencerCo pays CZ to put their logo on the wrong suppressor. Not vice versa. Removing the wrong muffler can be a bit of a challenge - preferably with a wrench. If not, channel locks work well, wrapped around the muscle with a thick belt to prevent injury.
It is mostly ambiguous - the safety and mag release are accessible from both sides. The charging case is interchangeable with your chosen side. The bolt only releases on the left side, but the bolt release is marked on the charging case by H&K.
The stock is foldable, which makes the gun easy to carry. The gun is fired while the stock is cocked.
It has three draw length slots to accommodate different shooters. Plus, thanks to the angled design, your eye is on the top rail. That will get you going with any flat sights or other low-rise optics you may want to equip. It also gives him a very fast and natural shooting position.

Trigger range is adjusted by sliding the grip forward and backward. Both sides of the device have sling attachment points.
The included metal sights are a delight to behold. If you don't need high-end visas, you don't need to replace them. The rear has four ghost rings to choose from on the rotating turrets, and raised sidewalls protect the front pillar.
I can put a white tip on the end grain to make it more visible. If you prefer to add a red dot to your iron sights, you may want to go for one on the larger side. Because they are shielded, metal can restrict your vision.
Most of the device mass is concentrated in the middle, more so than you would normally expect. It's because of that big piece of metal that they call it a bolt. It weighs about 1.5 pounds, a quarter of the rifle's curb weight of 6.38 pounds. It's a simple system though - you can't go far wrong. The ejector is built in and pretty heavy, so I don't see it breaking anytime soon. The act can also control some impurities. A little sand got into the action during the race and it shot pretty well. I didn't realize how much went into it until I took it to clean it.

The all-polymer construction looks more fragile than a gun made of steel, but is practically just as durable. It feels solid in your hands with no squeaks or rattles. I was pleased with the consistency of the shooting, hitting a nice tight group on the bench at 25 yards free and 50 yards. I have no doubt that it can be used perfectly at 100 meters.
Recoil is minimal when firing the weapon. Most of what you'll hear is the bolt turning, especially as it goes back into the battery. This makes it more unstable than some other pistol-caliber carbines like the MPX with its rotating bolt. But compared to other parameters, it is still not bad. The small amount of muzzle movement that occurs when firing is due to the fact that the bullet is fired, making the bullet feel a little more aggressive. So, the muzzle brake helps when it comes out, but the perceived recoil doesn't change much.
The device feels a little heavier than you might expect when shouldering it. Because the real problem is not the weight of the bolt, but the angle of the handle.
It has a significant back bend, about 45 degrees. This forces the elbow of your shooting arm into a horizontal position. This has a few negative consequences. This makes it more difficult to move the device quickly. A trigger forces your hand to move toward the gun and makes the gun feel heavier than it is. You can also try it yourself. All you have to do is pick up any handgun and shoulder it. Then slowly swing your shooting arm back to a horizontal position. Look at the top of the barrel. If you don't put more upward force with your support hand, you'll find that you start to sink down. We don't know what motivated CZ to design it that way, and it's not unique to the cabin.

The short barrel versions have the same problem. This has led many people to switch to a more upright aftermarket grip. It's something to consider when buying a gun and it improves the feel. Also, the safety selector prevents you from cutting your hand.
The change is possible without any problems. But if you are unsure of your skills, we always recommend having a qualified gunsmith do it.
The weight of the trigger is another slight disappointment. It's closer to a revolver trigger pull than a standard rifle. Weighed in at 8 lbs. This makes more sense on CZ's part as it could be the same trigger source used in their select fire models. It's less of a problem if you just hold the trigger with a hard pull and don't have to pull for every shot.
Aftermarket parts can fix this, but the process is more complicated than changing the case. Some models have a built-in trigger pack, so you'll need a special drill to access it.
Is The Cz Scorpion Evo 3 Carbine The Best Firearm For Vehicle Defense?
This one isn't assembled, and as far as we can tell, most were made in 2017 and not later. If yours is not attached, all you need is a hex key to loosen this bolt.
When changing the springs, it is useful to have a clamp to fit the trigger.
My final criticism is the size of the charging case. It is small, about the size of a finger.
Due to the strength of the return spring, filling requires some effort, especially at first. When it feels heavier than it should. If sorting feels impossible, it's probably because the safety selector is secure. The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 doesn't like to be pushed.
